作者J.R.R.

Washington hobbit hole is the first of three in an off grid shire

J.R.R. Tolkien created his furry-footed Hobbits to evoke a sense of connection to the Earth that he saw vanishing in the industrial age. So it makes sense that people seeking a sustainable home would turn to designs inspired by idyllic hobbit homes. Tiny house entrepreneur Kristie Wolfe decided to design her own off-grid Hobbit house in Washington state, and soon there will be two more.

Wolfe, a tiny home designer and dressmaker, found a 5.5 acre plot near Chelan, Washington where she could build a Hobbit home into the mountain. The home is 288 square feet and includes a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living space. It’s filled with rustic details such as round windows and a stone fireplace. Wolfe got creative with items like cable spools and driftwood bowls – she used a big spool for the round door and transformed the bowl into a beautiful sink.

Not only is it a cute home perfect for any Tolkien fan, it’s also off-grid. Three solar panels power the home, along with six volt batteries. The Hobbit hole receives water from a nearby water tower, and a greywater system recycles water for the grass covering the home. A septic tank takes waste and propane heats the house.

The front patio could be more Tolkien-esque only if Merry and Pippin arrived bearing mushrooms. It’s decked out with flowers and chairs so residents can appreciate the magnificent view of the valley.

Wolfe built the house to last, considering the pressure it has to withstand with the earth covering, adding “moisture guard insulation” to mitigate dampness. She just finished the home this spring and plans to complete two other tiny Hobbit homes in the area to start a micro-community.

She currently lists the Hobbit home on Airbnb so aficionados can visit for $220 per night. She’s designed another off-grid getaway too: an incredible Hawaiian treehouse.
